.corp

The .CORP Domain Guide

Unlike standard public top-level domains, .corp has a unique history. It is widely used for internal corporate networks (Intranets) and is not available for public registration on the global internet.

Name Collision

Due to its widespread use in internal Active Directory environments, ICANN has indefinitely delayed delegation of .corp to the public root.

Why ".corp"?

For decades, system administrators used .corp (short for corporate) as a pseudo-TLD for internal servers (e.g., `printer.corp` or `mail.internal.corp`) that were not meant to be accessible from the outside world.

Implications

Because so many systems are hard-coded to treat .corp as local, making it a public TLD now would cause massive security and stability issues (name collisions). Therefore, you cannot simply go to a registrar and buy a .corp domain for a public website.
